Instructor Qualifications and Instructor to pupil ratio.
Our instructors are certified by the 'Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Association' and are first aid trained. Our instructor to pupil ratio is 1:8
Medical information.
Applicants must complete the medical section of the application form accurately and truthfully. You must inform your instructor if you suffer from or have suffered from any of the following. Heart Condition, Diabetes, Stroke or T.I.A, Blackouts, Asthma, Epilepsy, Panic Attacks, Vertigo, Obesity. These conditions may or may not exclude you from taking part in the course, but we reserve the right to request a note from your doctor if we deem it necessary. We reserve the right refuse entry on the course if we deem the applicant unsuitable for the course.
Age limits.
Applicants for TCL courses must be over 18.
Safe Practice on the trail.
Participants must wear a helmet at all times whilst cycling. We also recommend that safety glasses and gloves are worn. Participants must be attentive to their instructor and must not cause a disturbance to or distract other course participants. Participants must inform their instructor if they feel unwell or uncomfortable during the training course.
Pre course requirements.
Applicants must have joined the SMBLA at a cost of £48 which gets you:
  • The SMBLA Official Training Manual Course documentation.
  • Logbook sheets and route cards.
  • Forms to join British Cycling Applicants.
Applicants must have logged 20 recent mountain bike rides which must be sent to us at least a week before training, have read the SMBLA Training Manual, have their own bike which is fitted with a bike computer (in km) for use in the navigation section. Applicants must also be equipped with the following on the day of the course. Suitable Mountain Bike (in good working condition). Cycle helmet and gloves. Cycle computer in Kilometres. Eye protection. Suitable clothing for a days cycle ride. Backpack, with spare clothing. Small tool kit, including pump and inner tubes. Food and drink (including lunch). First-Aid kit. Permanent pen for writing on maps. Compass (maps will be provided). SMBLA training manual and registration number.
Course Booking.
Applicants must complete the online booking form in full truthfully and accurately. We require a contact name and number of a third party, in case an emergency situation arises. In order to complete your booking you must have read, understood and agree to abide by the information outlined in this document. The information supplied by the applicant must be up to date.
Course Cancellation.
We may cancel any training course if sufficient numbers are not met or if an extraordinary circumstance arises. We will do our utmost not to cancel courses and will give applicants as much warning as is possible before a cancellation. Applicants are entitled to a full refund if the course is cancelled by us. Applicants may cancel their booking up to two weeks before the course date. However the following cancellation charges will apply:
  • 56 days or more before the course/assessment start date 25% of the course fee.
  • 55 to 21 days before the course/assessment start date 50% of the course fee.
  • 20 days or less before the course/assessment start date 100% of the course fee.
Cancellation must be done by email to bookings@mountainbiking.ie please be sure to detail your name and course date on the email.
Course Payment.
Applicants are required to pay in full two weeks before the course date, preferably by cheque or cash we do not accept credit / debit cards. Payments can be made directly to your course instructor. The course fee is €150.00 for the two day TCL course and €90.00 for the TCL Assessment.
